CERTAIN TRADE UNIONISTS ILL-INFORMED ABOUT PUBLIC ORDER (AMENDMENT) DECREE 2012
Details of a meeting yesterday between certain trade unionists and the Commissioner of Police was aired on TV One news. The surprising thing about this meeting was that these trade unionists certainly appeared ill-informed about the newly introduced Public Order (Amendment) Decree 2012 that has now replaced the draconian Public Emergency Regulations Decree 2009.
The Public Emergency Regulation Decree 2009 has now resurfaced as the Public Order (Amendment) Decree 2012 and remains draconian and anti human rights and anti workers rights, refer to our first analysis: LICENSE TO KILL: PUBLIC ORDER (AMENDMENT) ACT 2012
Its laughable to hear these unionists say that they can now return to "normal work under the law" and that the police will "facilitate activities" and unions now have "access" to higher officers with the police force. It appears that Attar Singh, Pramod Rae and Agni Deo Singh have not even read the Public Order (Amendment) Decree 2012. Further they each contradicted what they said and what is written in the Public Order (Amendment) Decree 2012.
Please read this decree and understand what you can and cannot do under this amended and stronger version of the PER. Further what "normal work under the law" were these unionists suggesting when the regime has attacked workers rights and received local and international condemnation for the Essential National Industries Decree No. 35 of 2011. Very apparent was the absence of the President and the General Secretary of the Fiji Trade Union Congress, Daniel Urai and Felix Anthony. It is a shame and concern that FTUC, the body that is internationally recognised representing Fijian workers was not invited to this meeting!
