The regime continue with attacks against local media outlets. Fiji Times Limited appeared in court yesterday and entered a plea of not guilty against a charge of contempt of court.
Torture Watch first highlighted this story on 16 and 18 November 2011: HYPOCRISY REIGNS SUPREME: ILLEGAL A-G TAKES TIMES TO COURT BUT FORGETS CITIZENS and REGIME QUICK TO DEFENDS ITS IMAGE BUT NOT HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSES & TORTURE ACTS
The charge of contempt of court has been brought against the Fiji Times and their editor-in-chief and former publisher. This case was set for hearing on 13 & 14 February but has not been adjourned for mention on 09 March 2012.
The irony in all of this is that whatever Fiji Times published was accurate, factual and the truth.
The Fiji Times had run a story regarding FIFA is probing the deputy chairman of its disciplinary committee and treasurer of the Oceania Football Confederation, Dr Muhammad Shamsud-Dean Sahu Khan, a former lawyer who has been disbarred by the Independent Legal Services Commission in Fiji and banned from holding a practising certificate for 10 years. He is appealing the decision.
Here is the side issue: In response to Sunday Star-Times inquiries, Fifa said a Fifa statement. Tai Nicholas, OFC general secretary said: "Obviously there's an appeal. If we're honest, there's debate around the coup regime, who are ostracising lawyers who are involved with the constitutional reforms. "You should be aware that with no judiciary there, his case has been reviewed by one Australian judge. It's not a court per se".
It was the above underlined comment that caught the eye of the illegal A-G and the reason why Fiji Times Limited has been charged with contempt of court. It is no secret that the Fijian judiciary is stacked with regime sympathisers in magistrate and judge positions. The regime is using this case to spread further fear and and victimise the Fijian media.
Is there any coincidence that the illegal Prime Minister singled out and publicly named the Fiji Times for biased reporting in his New Year's address to the nation?
