SAMOAN PRIME MINISTER SCEPTICAL OF FIJI ELECTION PROMISE
Samoa's prime minister says he does not believe a scheduled election in Fiji in 2014 will actually happen.
Tuilaepa Sailele says the election, announced by Fiji's military leader Frank Bainimarama, is an empty promise.
"The mass recruitment/appointment of army people to fill up the top posts in the public service, that does not indicate a regime [that's] very serious about getting elections done," he said.
The Samoan prime minister told Radio Australia's Pacific Beat military involvement in politics could become contagious and that Pacific nations should oppose what is happening in Fiji.
"We have to speak out against this in case some people think we like to see this happening in other countries of the Pacific as well."
